Buying an Appliance in Ireland: Delivery, Installation and Disposal
The tricky part of buying a fridge freezer, washing machine or cooker isn't choosing it — it's getting it delivered, installed and the old one taken away. Here's how it works in Ireland, and why buying local makes it easier.
When you buy a large appliance in Ireland you should consider three things beyond the product: delivery (to the room, not just the kerb), installation (connecting a washing machine or plumbing/wiring a cooker), and disposal of the old appliance under the WEEE scheme. Retailers are obliged to take back an old appliance on a like-for-like basis under WEEE. Buying from a local retailer like Brennan's usually means a more flexible, personal delivery, install and take-away service than the big chains.
WEEE - recycling your old appliance. Under Ireland's WEEE (Waste Electrical and Electronic Equipment) rules, when you buy a new electrical appliance the retailer must take back your old equivalent one free of charge for recycling, on a one-for-one basis. Ask for this at purchase so the old unit is collected on delivery. For full details on your rights under the scheme, see WEEE Ireland.
Delivery, install, disposal
Beyond choosing the appliance itself, these are the three things worth checking with any retailer before you buy.
| Step | What to check |
|---|---|
| Delivery | Is it to the room of choice, on a day that suits - or just kerbside? Measure doorways and access first. |
| Installation | Will they connect it (washing machine, dishwasher) or wire/plumb it (cooker, hob)? Some jobs need a registered electrician/plumber. |
| Old-appliance disposal | Under WEEE, retailers take back your old appliance like-for-like - check it's included. |
Confirm all three before you buy - a good local retailer includes them as standard.
Why buy local
A local retailer can usually make delivery, installation and old-appliance take-away simpler than a big chain.
- Personal delivery to the room. Arranged to suit you - not a fixed slot from a warehouse.
- Installation and old-appliance take-away handled together. One visit, not two separate bookings.
- Local advice and after-sales you can actually reach. A real person, not a call centre.
- Supporting an Irish business. Rather than a multinational chain.
