Heat Pump, Condenser or Vented: Which Tumble Dryer?
Tumble dryers come in three types, and choosing the wrong one is either a daily annoyance or years of higher electricity bills. The differences are not just marketing they change where you can put the dryer and what it costs to run. Here is how heat pump, condenser and vented dryers actually differ, and which suits your home.
There are three tumble dryer types. A vented dryer expels warm, moist air through a hose to an outside wall, cheap to buy, but it needs a vent and is expensive to run. A condenser dryer collects the moisture in a tank (or drains it away) so it needs no vent, more flexible on placement, similar running cost to vented. A heat pump dryer recycles its own warm air, using far less energy, the most efficient by a wide margin and the cheapest to run, though it costs more to buy and dries a little more gently. For most Irish homes without a convenient vent, a heat pump or condenser is the answer, and a heat pump if you run the dryer often.

How each type dries, and where the water goes
- Vented. Heats air, passes it through the clothes, and blows the warm damp air outside through a hose. Needs an external vent.
- Condenser. Heats air the same way, but condenses the moisture out into a tank you empty (or a drain) instead of venting it. No vent needed.
- Heat pump. A condenser dryer with a heat pump that reuses the heat from the extracted air instead of throwing it away, so it uses far less electricity.
Which needs a vent?
This decides it for many homes. A vented dryer must sit against an outside wall or window it can vent through, awkward or impossible in a lot of Irish utility rooms and apartments. Condenser and heat pump dryers need no vent, so they can go anywhere there is a socket, which is why they have become the default choice. If you cannot easily vent, that rules out the vented type immediately.
Running cost and drying: heat pump wins by a distance
This is where heat pump dryers earn their higher price. They use roughly a third to a half of the energy of a vented or condenser dryer for the same load, because they recycle the heat rather than expelling it. Over a few years of regular use, that saving typically outweighs the higher purchase price. The trade-off is that heat pump dryers run at lower temperatures, so cycles take a little longer and are gentler on clothes, which most people consider a bonus.
